What did I learn from the Pizza Run?
September 20, 2010
Quick hits from this morning:
-Running outside on a sidewalk is different than running on a treadmill. Unsurprising, I guess.
-The hardest part was not the running but instead the chewing of the pizza. It was good pizza, keep in mind, but when you get to the crust, it’s pretty difficult to chew that sucker and get it down your throat. Having water to drink while eating the crust really bailed me out, and I almost definitely spent at least 5 minutes of my 22:52 run just eating those damn slices.
-I was sort of tired after sort-of sprinting the first lap, but my legs didn’t feel so bad afterwards. That’s probably due to 1) all the time I spent eating pizza and thus not-running, and 2) me focusing my efforts on keeping the pizza down instead of going as fast as I could.
-My goodie bag consisted mainly of coupons, which was sort of disappointing. The T-shirt’s pretty cool, though. For $35 (albeit, part of it allegedly goes to charity), it would have been cool to have some other stuff too.
-Afterwards, some people (not affliated with the event) handed out samples for gas prevention. Pretty entertaining, and not at all a bad idea.
and, last, but not least…
-Pizza does not help you run faster.

You should make a T-shirt that says “I did the Pizza Run and all I got were these lousy coupons” and wear it to the Pizza Run next year.

Thanks for coming out!
Just in case you’re curious — a donation was, in fact, made to JDRF on behalf of each participant. The rest of the registration fee goes towards permits, supplies (water, race bib, safety pins, etc), t-shirts, pizza and beer, etc… in addition to fees for Eventbrite (through which you purchased your ticket), our website designer and our graphic designer. It’s an expensive event to put on.

Oh, yes–I didn’t mean to insinuate that it doesn’t go to charity, just that I didn’t remember which one it was at the time of writing. Sorry if that was the case!
